Welcome to the Georgia Southern University Department of Physics!
The department offers a variety of studies in the fields of Physics and Astronomy leading to a Bachelor of Science in Physics or a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Physics Degree. Our majors graduate well prepared for a career in physics whether it be in industry, a professional degree such as medicine or dentistry, teaching physics in the high school, or to pursue an advanced degree.
In addition to an in-depth program of study for students, the department offers opportunities for students to
participate in world-class physics/astronomy research in the following areas:
- Quantum gases
- Quantum computing
- Medical physics
- Materials science
- Laser physics
- Acoustics
- Physics education
- Galaxy formation
- Observational astronomy
The Georgia Southern Planetarium is housed in the department and offers a variety of events for K-12 students and the public through public evenings.
