The field of Mechanical Engineering Technology encompasses a broad range of careers that include design, testing, manufacturing, operations, maintenance, technical support, customer service, and technical sales. These varied careers can be in support of industries as diverse as product design and fabrication, power generation, climate control (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), transportation (vehicles and infrastructure), and systems control. Mechanical Engineering Technologists are applied problem solvers, limited in their professional growth only by their personal motivation and ability. Responsibilities can range from those of a support technician to plant manager. In the State of Georgia , MET professionals can attempt the challenging process to become licensed Professional Engineers.
Mechanical Engineer Technology is a 4-yr, Bachelor of Science degree taught by Georgia Southern faculty and completed on the Statesboro campus. In fact all MET courses are taught exclusively by faculty; teaching assistants are not used. Class-sizes range from 20-45 students, so there is ample access to the faculty during class time. The B.S. in MET degree differs from a B.S. in ME degree in that the program requirements are more applied in nature.
Mechanical Engineer Technology is a professional degree in the field of applied engineering sciences. MET areas of technical depth at Georgia Southern includes mechanical design and analysis, material science and manufacturing processing, thermal-fluid-energy sciences, computer aided engineering graphics and analysis, and electro-mechanical devices and controls with an emphasis in technical measurements. By applied engineering sciences, it is meant that use is emphasized over theory. Mechanical Engineering Technology is considered a professional degree because graduates of the program are not only work ready, they are also qualified to become licensed Professional Engineers.
The MET program at Georgia Southern is a rapidly growing program with a mature and stable curriculum. A Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree was approved by the Board of Regents in 1972 and first offered at Georgia Southern in 1973. The MET program was first accredited by TAC of ABET in 1980. The degree program was subsequently re-accredited in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1994, and 2000.
