This page provides an application form for AGI's Minority Geoscience Student Scholarships.

American Geological Institute - Geoscience Education Outreach
This page provides an application form for AGI's Summer Internship in Geoscience Education Outreach. Deadline is May 1.

American Geological Institute - Geotimes Internship
Geotimes, the monthly news magazine of the earth sciences, is
accepting applications for its summer internship. They are looking
for individuals, preferably with a geoscience background, who are
interested in science writing and journalism. Based at the American
Geological Institute in Alexandria, Va., the internship is 12 weeks long
and includes a stipend.

 California Space Grant
This page provides a list of internship opportunities within Space Grant colleges and universities in California -- several different types of programs are available! Deadline varies by program.

Carnegie Institution of Washington
The Geophysical Laboratory and Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. Internship opportunities in the geosciences (experimental petrology, mineralogy, mineral physics, seismology), planetary sciences and astronomy, and related chemical sciences (geochemistry, cosmochemistry). Deadline is March 15.

Council on Undergraduate Research
The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) awards summer fellowships to students interested in pursuing their research interests at primarily undergraduate institutions. CUR fellowships provide a unique opportunity for undergraduate students and their faculty mentors to engage in approximately ten weeks of full-time research in the research setting at their home institution. Deadline in January.

Summer internships. Deadlines vary by program

Geological Society of America
GSA offers a wide variety of summer funding opportunities. They place students in the national parks, and in some regions/areas have research grants available for undergraduates. Deadlines vary by program.

Goddard Space Flight Center
Goddard offers all kinds of earth science internship opportunities, most associated with terrestrial remote sensing or planetary geology. The description of this program indicates that it is for graduate students only, but there are instances in which undergraduates have been accepted as well and several of the staff prefer to have undergraduate help during the summer. The key is to hook up with a mentor well in advance. Deadline in early February.

Keck Geology Consortium
This program offers research project experience to rising juniors and seniors 12 Keck Consortium schools. There are also opportunities available for minority students from any undergraduate institution. Deadline in early February.

Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
This summer program encourages applicants interested in a variety of earth science fields -- geology, oceanography, geophysics, tectonics, etc -- and matches students up from among available mentors. Deadline in early March.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Summer and semester internships at the LLNL.

Los Alamos National Laboratory
Student Employment Programs hire students to work throughout the Laboratory in both technical and administrative areas. Students range from High School to Graduate students. All students have a mentor and are encouraged to participate in all Laboratory activities. Safety and security are emphasized and are an integral part of each student program. Variable deadlines.

Lunar and Planetary Institute
The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) offers undergraduates an opportunity to participate actively in lunar and planetary research with scientists at LPI and the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). The purpose of this program is to expose undergraduate students in planetary and terrestrial studies to a research environment in order to help them examine and focus their career goals and to encourage their development as planetary scientists. Deadline in early February.

Mineralogical Society of America
Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) grant for student research in Mineralogy and Petrology comprise two separate $3500 grants for student research in mineralogy and petrology. Deadline in June.

National Public Radio
NPR offers internships at its national headquarters in Washington, Dc and at NPR West office in Los Angeles, CA. The internship program is designed to provide students and recent graduates with an opportunity to learn about broadcasting and the supporting areas of NPR. There are opportunities for both geology and geography majors. Variable deadlines and for variable semesters.

NASA student internships
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) student opportunities are designed to combine academic studies with on-the-job training and experience and to give students an opportunity to work with NASA while completing their education. Each NASA Field Center manages its own programs. Search this page for information about NASA student opportunties. Deadlines vary by program.

Research Experience for Undergraduates
The National Science Foundation makes possible a number of opportunities for undergraduates to join research projects each summer. This allows students to experience first-hand how basic research is carried out, and to contribute consequentially. REU "Sites" are established in all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Each Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates, who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is assigned to a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. Deadlines vary by project.

National Wildlife Federation Internship Program
The National Wildlife Federation Internship Program provides to qualified, committed and diverse individuals a work-based learning experience and opportunities to develop excellent professional skills and relationships, working as integral team members to achieve NWF's conservation and education mission.
