Biology

In today's world, studies in Biology are becoming increasingly important. Georgia Southern University's Biology program prepares students for careers as professional biologists in a wide variety of fields. Southeast Georgia is a biologically rich and ecologically diverse area that encompasses coastline, wetlands, woodlands, and cities. Consistent with the mission of the University, the Biology Department seeks to expand horizons through outreach, preserve distinctive cultural and natural legacies, and maintain the integrity of South Georgia's environment.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry offers a well balanced program for the education of its students. To prepare them for their professional careers, the Department is committed to providing quality teaching and research experiences emphasizing critical and independent thought. The curriculum provides strong innovative instruction in the theory and practice of the chemical sciences. It is designed to introduce students to modern laboratory methods and technology using state-of-the-art scientific equipment. The faculty is committed to providing an environment that addresses the individual needs of each student and encourages them to develop their potential through life-long learning and to be responsible members of their profession and community.

Construction Management & Civil Engineering Technology

The department offers two accredited degree programs taught by highly qualified faculty. The Construction Management (CM) program prepares graduates for careers as qualified project managers and other disciplines in the construction industry. Graduates are employed by major national and international construction companies in addition to those in the south eastern region. Many graduates have also formed their own companies. Civil Engineering Technology (CET) Graduates are well prepared for careers in the environmental, structural, and transportation areas of the discipline at local, state, and national levels. Graduates are employed in a wide range of positions with industry and government.

The department has currently more than 500 students in CM and 130 students in CET program. Students are taught in modern laboratories using updated state of the art computer software for estimating, scheduling, structural analysis, environmental practices, and other related fields.

Geology and Geography

The department strives to offer a balance of teaching, research, and service to the region served by the University and beyond. Areas of focus among geology faculty include igneous and metamorphic petrology, paleontology, sedimen-tology, structural geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology, and natural history of the Coastal Plain. Geography faculty interests include climatology, geomorphology, human and cultural geography, and biogeography. Both programs emphasize computer applications, including Geographic Information Systems.

Mathematical Sciences

The primary areas of interest of the Department of Mathematical Science are mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. Mathematics is a discipline which requires the abilities to think logically and to reason correctly about diverse concepts. It also requires highly developed communication and writing skills.

Mechanical Engineering & Electrical Engineering Technology

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology offers four undergraduate programs of study in Engineering Technology, Engineering Studies, and Technical Management. The department also offers a graduate degree in Master of Technology. Students can receive Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Manufacturing. These accredited programs are housed in a modern facility which includes state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and equipment. All faculty hold doctorate degree in their field and have substantial industrial experience. Students who desire a degree in Engineering from Georgia Tech can enroll in the Engineering Studies program (GTREP/RETP or TOP) for freshman and sophomore years and upon completion of the first two years transfer to GT Atlanta or Savannah campus.

The department is committed to providing high quality technical instruction with hands-on laboratory and field activities to students. Graduates of these programs are successfully employed in the mainstream industry and broadening high-tech segment.

Military Science

The Georgia Southern University Military Science Department is charged with managing the Army's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program on campus. Army ROTC provides college-trained officers for the U.S. Army, the Army National Guard, and the U.S. Army Reserve. It does this through a combination of college courses in military science and summer training sessions.

Physics

There are currently seven different research projects in the areas of astronomy, biophysics, and theoretical and experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Our goal is to continue to provide a superior education to Georgia Southern students and to conduct state of the art research in Astronomy, Laser Physics, and Theoretical Physics.

Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Program

Welcome to the Georgia Southern University Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental. This site is designed to provide you with the up-to-date information that you need as you move through the Pre-Medical or Pre-Dental program.

The most important piece of information on this site
You CANNOT major in Pre-Medicine and Pre-Dentistry. You need to choose a major from a university degree program (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.). Students from any major may participate in the Pre-Med and Pre-Dent programs which are designed to:

  1. prepare you for the professional school entrance exam (MCAT for medicine and DAT for Dentistry) that you will take in your junior year

  2. provide the scientific foundation for your professional education

You'll find more information on majors and the pre-med/dent curriculum under the Advising Info Link at the left.

Explore the site and its links. If you still can't find what your looking for, contact Prof. Jim Braselton who maintains this site or any of the Pre-Med/Pre-Dent Advisors listed under the link at the left.

Make your first stop the Bulletin Board where you will find all of the latest news and happenings.
