by Dr. Orrin Pilkey, Professor of Geology, Director of PSDS, Duke University


Dr. Pilkey is Professor of Geology and Director of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines at Duke University. He received his Ph.D. in Geology from Florida State University. He is an expert on beach behavior, beach replenishment processes and shoreline stabilization. He was rewarded with the American Geological Institute's award for outstanding public communication. The American Association for Petroleum Geologists and the National Association of Geology Teachers have bestowed him with other awards. He has published more than 150 technical publications in his career. His research has been funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Geographic Society, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, the US Geological Survey and the National Science Foundation. Recently, Dr. Pilkey's work was the subject of a feature article in Smithsonian magazine.
