Dr. Stanley Hanson Dr. Stanley Hanson, Emeritus
Professor of Geology and Emeritus Head of the Department of Geology
and Geography retired in August 1988. Dr. Hanson was born in Whitesburg,
Georgia, in 1923. He received the B.A. in Chemistry (1946), the
M.S. in Chemistry (1949), and the M.A. in Geology (1959) all from
Emory University and the Ph.D. (1966) in geology-geochemistry
from the University of Arizona. After holding positions at Middle
Georgia College, Piedmont College, Reinhardt College, Oxford College
of Emory University, and Sul Ross State College, he joined the
faculty of Georgia Southern College in 1964 as an Assistant Professor
of Chemistry and Geology in what was then the Division of Science
and Mathematics. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Geology
in 1967 and to Professor of Geology in 1975. He assumed the headship
of the newly-formed Department of Geology in 1970 when the College
revised its administrative structure, and he oversaw the Department's
growth from then until he retired in 1988. Dr. Hanson held offices
in the Georgia Academy of Science and the Georgia Geological Society.
His professional interests lie in the areas of petrology, petrography,
structure and geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks, and
geomorphology of arid regions and glaciated regions. Dr. Hanson
completed 24 years of distinguished service and was given the
title of Professor Emeritus of Geology and Department Head Emeritus
of the Department of Geology and Geography.
