Earth Science Computer Applications Laboratory


This laboratory was completely renovated in the early 2000's and is currently in use in teaching Geology and Geography courses.


Earth Sciences Computer Applications Laboratory

The Earth Science Computer Applications Laboratory (ESCAL) currently contains sixteen Gateways all hard wired into the Georgia Southern fiberoptic backbone to access the Internet. The lab also has one IDEAL plotter, six Gateway computers for research students use, two scanners (UMAX scanner for larger maps and an HP scanner), one Epson Powerlite wireless projector, and one printer for the computers. A variety of software is available for word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and GIS applications. The lab is primarily used by Geology and Geography majors. If you would like more information about this laboratory, please feel free to contact Dr. Charles Trupe, Director of ESCAL. The lab is not open to the public, so there are no staff or hours of operation.

Software available in ESCAL includes ArcGIS, Adobe Acrobat Reader, ERDAS Imagine, Microsoft Office 2000 (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Word Perfect Office 2000, Adobe PageMill, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe PageMaker, Canvas, AppleWorks or ClarisWorks, and DeltaGraph .

Of course, all computers have internet browsers, telnet, email software such as Eudora, Adobe Acrobat Reader, virus protection software, Fetch, etc. Computers with peripherals such as CD burner, scanner, etc. have peripheral-specific software (e.g. Toast for the CD burner, Umax MagicScan for the large scanner, Polaroid PolarColor Insight, SprintScan, etc.).
