| Chair's
Welcome
Welcome to the CMCET department at Georgia Southern University. Our proximity to the
Atlantic coastline makes our location one of the most desired in the country. The campus sits
approximately 45-minutes West of Savannah and Hilton Head, 3-hours East of Atlanta, 1-hour South
of Charleston, and about 2.5-hours North of Jacksonville. This location affords our students
plenty of opportunity to gain valuable construction and design experience as they complete their
degrees. Of course the islands along the Georgia coast that were good enough to attract the likes
of J.P. Morgan and other wealthy jetsetters, are still there and just as beautiful. The campus is
large enough to offer all the amenities (e.g. a $27 million Recreation Center), services, and friendly
people you could want as a student or alumnus. The on-campus Performing Arts Center includes first
class performances and the stadium features high profile national performers, when the football
team isn’t trouncing some opponent.
The department offers two accredited degree
programs with courses being taught by highly qualified faculty. Demographic shifts and
increasing global population have resulted in very high demand for graduates that have degrees
specializing in the Built Environment. Civil Engineering Technology and Construction Management
are two such degrees. The Construction Management (CM) program prepares graduates for careers as
construction project managers, estimators, schedulers, contract administrators, and various
executive-level positions in the construction industry. Graduates are employed by major national
and international companies that specialize in commercial, industrial, or residential construction
and construction/program management.
Recent trends show that building information
modeling (BIM) will become increasingly important to the construction industry. At Georgia
Southern, we take this trend seriously and are preparing our students to meet the challenges
of industry by exposing them to BIM tools. In addition, we are committed to helping students
understand international strategies and protocols for minimizing the environmental impact of
construction; promoting graduates that can lead the global construction industry toward
sustainable design and development.
Construction Managers (CMs) often lead the
construction project team as they manage the money, materials, manpower, machinery and time
on behalf of the building owner or developer. In some instances, a CM may assist an owner
before design or construction is underway. In other cases, the CM may get involved after
construction is completed to assist building owners or developers resolve disputes. But in
most cases, the CM will be involved in the management of all activities required to complete
the construction effort. As a result, graduates are hired into well-paying government and
private sector positions. More information about Construction Management can be found at http://www.cmaanet.org.
Civil Engineering Technology (CET) Graduates
are well prepared for careers in the environmental, structural, and transportation areas of the
discipline in the local, state, regional, national, and international markets. Graduates are
employed in a wide range of positions as consultants and engineers for small and major corporate
and government entities.
CET graduates are needed around the globe to
address increasing infrastructure demands such as natural disaster mitigation, hydroelectric
power, water supply and treatment, roads and bridges, and the design of other important elements
of the built environment. CET and CM graduates also help to shape important national policies
affecting the built environment through their professional associations. The web site for the
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at http://www.asce.org provides excellent information
about the exciting field of Civil Engineering.
As you can see, the opportunities for graduates
of the CMCET department are manifold. In addition to the high job placement rates and high
salaries of department graduates, this is a field where one’s efforts result in a lasting legacy.
As with the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, and builders of the Gothic cathedrals, graduates have the
opportunity to make a difference today and for many generations. So, if you are ready to have your
intellect, creativity, and ingenuity challenged, join us for one of most important degrees of this
and the next century – Construction Management or Civil Engineering Technology.
The CMCET department has over 500 students
enrolled in the CM program and over 125 students enrolled in the CET program. Students are taught
in modern laboratories using state-of-the-art computer software for estimating, scheduling, online
project management, construction law, structural analysis, and environmental practices.
We welcome your interest in this
exciting field.
Sincerely yours,
Brian C. Moore, Ph.D.
