Dr. Deal is a native of Statesboro and alum of Georgia Southern. A couple of years after earning his Ph.D. in the land of the Buckeyes (Ohio State), Dr. Deal accepted the opportunity to return to the faculty of his undergraduate alma mater and has never regretted that decision. His research interests are diverse and include synthesis of biologically active carbohydrates and their derivatives, synthetic methodology and manipulation of pharmaceutically important carbohydrates, and numerous aspects of chemical education. He and his Georgia Southern colleague, Dr. Laura Frost, are currently authoring a textbook for allied health chemistry students, which focuses on integrating the topics traditionally taught in the course to allow for more complete coverage of the essential concepts. Dr. Deal is married to his high school best friend, Karen Budack, and they have two beautiful daughters and a cute dog. In his spare time, Dr. Deal is an avid cyclist, serves as the P.A. voice for the Georgia Southern football and baseball teams, is faculty advisor to the Baptist Collegiate Ministries and the Georgia Southern Organization of Pre-Health Professionals, and is the lead advisor for the pre-medicine/pre-dentistry program.
