The Medical/Dental Admissions Review Board is a committee of faculty members appointed by the Dean of the College of Science and Technology to oversee the pre-medical/pre-dental program.
The committee is responsible for:
reviewing the curriculum of the program to ensure that it is current and meets the requirements of the medical & dental schools to which our students are applying
providing current information on advisement and the medical/dental school application process to both advisors and pre-med/pre-dent students
interviewing each senior pre-med/pre-dent student and, based on this interview, writing a letter of recommendation
On this page, you will find information about the requirements to be interviewed by the Board, the interview process, and the membership of the Board.
In order for your composite letter to be finalized after your interview by the
Board,
Pre-dent students must:
have at least a 2.8 cumulative GPA
have taken the DAT and received your scores; scores must average at least 15 on each section of the DAT or registered to take the DAT and provided the Board with at least two practice MCAT scores, one of which must be 20 or higher. YOur composite letter will not be finalized until you submit official DAT scores to the Chair. (Refer to http://www.e-mcat.com for practice MCAT exams.)
Pre-med students must:
have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
have taken the MCAT and received your scores; total scores on the MCAT must be at least 22 or registered to take the MCAT and provided the Board with at least two practice MCAT scores, one of which must be 20 or higher. Your composite letter will not be finalized until you submit official MCAT scores to the Chair. (Refer to http://www.e-mcat.com for practice MCAT exams.)
Both groups should consider enrolling in e-mcat by going to www.e-mcat.com. You can practice MCAT #3 for free. Other exams are available for practice, but there is a fee associated with them. Successful pre-medical/dental students start preparing for the MCAT/DAT as freshmen. The Board will appreciate your honest practice scores if you have not taken the formal exam when submitting your material for your interview.
Both groups are required to have letters of recommendation/evaluation sent directly to the Chair of the Board.
Contact three or more evaluators, none of whom are members of the Board, and request letters of evaluation be sent directly to the Board. At most two or the letters must be from faculty in the sciences and at least one must be from an external evaluator, preferably someone who is familiar with your clinical (volunteered or paid) experience. Give them a copy of your waiver form and ask them to include it with their letter. Be sure to confirm that the letters of evaluation have been received by the Chair of the Board. Rather than writing a letter, your evaluator may prefer to complete the form that can be downloaded here. However, the Board requests that letters from medical professionals be sent on letterhead accompanied with the waiver.
Your letters of evaluation
should be sent to:
Jim Braselton
Chair, Medical and Dental Review Board
Department of Mathematical Sciences
P.O. Box 8093
Georgia Southern University
Statesboro, GA 30460-8093
Once you have completed the above requirements and your letters of recommendation
have been received by the Board you are eligible for an interview to begin the
letter of recommendation process.
First, contact Prof. Jim Braselton to set up a time for your interview with the Board. Generally, Board interviews will be conducted during the spring of your junior year. The instructions for the formation of the schedule will be usually announced during Fall semester at the Bulletin Board. If you plan on interviewing at a different time, plan on contacting Prof. Braselton at least twelve weeks (not counting summer, breaks, and holidays) before you need the composite letter. For other official correspondences, allow at least 10 working days during the regular academic year." (Typically, your interview will be during the spring semester of your junior year after you have taken the MCAT/DAT and can submit the scores with your portfolio; your letter will be ready for you when you return in the Fall.)
Then, prepare five (5) copies of your interview packet and deliver a copy to each member of the board at least five business days before your scheduled interview.
Your interview packet must contain:
a copy of your transcript showing all college work (you can print this from WINGS)
a one page list of your honors, awards, extracurricular activities, and work experience, with college listed first and high school listed second (see example)
a personal statement/essay explaining your motivation for a career in health care and why you think you would be a good healthcare provider.
Your personal statement/essay should also include explanations regarding any offenses, misdemeanors, and felonies that you may have committed that an admissions officer might scrutinize more closely in their examination of your application. If no such offenses have occurred, on a separate page, you must explicitly state so and sign your name below your statement that you have not admitted guilt to, committed, or been convicted of offenses against university policy (such as cheating), misdemeanors, and or felonies.
